Look back to move forward
Have you ever looked back over a period of time to see where you were verses where you are?
I remember a time when there was no way I wanted to look back at where I was six weeks or six months ago because I knew I wasn’t anywhere different than I was before that point. I knew I was slowly stagnating — unchallenged mentally and just stuck in a rut.
But… things started changing for me about a year ago. Oddly enough, I can almost point to one specific thing I did that was a catalyst for so much of the change I’ve experienced personally, emotionally, and professionally.
The motorcycle.
Yep, isn’t that crazy?? Here’s the thing. I would not ride on that motorcycle because I was afraid. That fear wasn’t based just on the fact that we would be barreling down the road way too fast on two tiny wheels , but that was the biggest part of it.
When I faced that fear by getting on the back of that motorcycle and keeping an open mind, I was shocked to find that I liked it…
No. I didn’t just like it – I loved it!
Keeping an open mind was key — Because I faced that fear, (which for me was a pretty big deal because I suffer with vertigo terribly if I can’t see/touch a wall) I opened up an entirely new world of opportunity to discover new things and see new places. Those who know me know that means “opens a whole new world to shop in” – namely any Harley store between Point A and Point B. After all, that’s how Marty first bribed me onto the back of the first motorcycle was with a new pair of Harley boots! (He had me at the boots… don’t tell him that, though!)
On the back of the bike, my mind is clear. My only responsibility is to not fall off. I watched the fields go from seedlings to “knee-high by the 4th of July” to harvest. I’ve discovered there are truly beautiful flowers growing along the roadside. I also know where the chicken farms are…
So as the story goes, what started with a Vulcan in the garage as something I was NEVER going to ride on, and probably still wouldn’t today if I’m being totally honest, evolved into a plush Goldwing which allowed me to build up some confidence about the whole flying down the road on two tiny wheels thing. That has morphed into now being a full-fledged #HarleyMom.
Who would have EVER thought? Certainly not me!
So, as they say, the moral of the story is – face your fears! Figure out what the root of the fear is that’s holding you back from doing something you want to do, and then identify what steps you need to take to master that fear.
I’ve been afraid a lot the last few years. One at a time, I’m conquering those fears. I’m growing as an individual and I’m becoming more approachable. As dear Teri says, I’m “unpuckering” a bit at a time.
Life has never been quite as freeing as it is in this moment.
